Leisure

NASI GORENG PROGO
Located at Jl. Progo, Taking a left turn from the "kota" or Jl. Jendral Sudirman just before "Reksa Theatre".

map of Progo

Progo is a very 'classical' place to eat in the evening. The most famous dish is "Bakmi", but all the foods are terrific! The Nasi Goreng is deliciously cooked, especially if you like pork.

Be prepared for a half-hour wait as this warung house usually very full. No wonder with this kind of taste! If you have enough time, try the "kue serabi", a kind of indonesian pan-cake made from rice flour. For drinks, try the "wedang tape", tastes sweet because of fermented "ketan".

PECEL MADYA
In the morning, this "Pecel" warung is an excellent place to eat. Opens from 8 to 11 am, it is located just behind the "Madya" theatre. Walk through a (very) small paveway beside the theatre, and you're there. If you took motorcycle with you, park it beside "Madya" for Rp100.

The people at warung Pecel Madya are very nice. No wonder a lot (most, actually) uksw students eat there everyday. For the Pecel, you can choose abundant varieties of toppings. From "bakwan jagung", "martabak", to "iso babat" pecel madya map

If you are a boy and appears that you like to eat much (like me), best chance is that you are offerred the "Borobudur banjir". Meaning you would eat a lot of rice with flooded peanut sauce. Other thing you should never forget is the "Onclang" fried with duck eggs because you will never find it anywhere. Great food from great people!

NASI GORENG PETE
Used to be referred as Nasgorsu or "nasi goreng susu" which highly associated to the size of "susu" of the owner. This warung is located in front of "Gereja Pentakosta" church. Go straight until the last red-light intersection of Jl. Jenderal Sudirman (kota) and make a right turn.

Nasgorsu map In this warung you will eat just beside the street and it is very nice to see people and cars passing by. The main dish is "Nasi Goreng" which fried with "iso", "babat", and ... "pete". You could customize your choice, of course.

The "nasi goreng iso babat" is the favorite of all, but try the "babat gongso" for another fine eating experience. If you prefer chicken "nasi goreng" their dish is also delicious. This warung place is open day and night, almost 24 hours straight. Accompany your plate with "es jeruk" for a really pleasant evening dinner!

NASI GORENG mas JOKO
This "nasi goreng" is sold using traditional javanese "cangkringan", a bamboo shaft with loads on each ends. One end is for the "anglo", clay stove with "arang"-coal liked properties, and the other end is for the "nasi" and cooking stuff.

cangkringan

Mas Joko sells his nasi goreng on jalan Pattimura. Take the opposite direction of jalan Jendral Sudirman (kota) at the "bunderan". His "cangkringan" opens from 17.30 till 23.00, or if you are lucky, until midnight.

mas joko

Widely known for his humongous-sized servings, actually you could make two plates out of one "nasi goreng" order. The taste is very javanese since he uses the "miri" in his recipes. If you want, you could also ask for "balungan" or "tengkorak" and he would give you much chicken slicings in your nasi goreng. Try the "nasi godhog" also.

TAHU CAMPUR AMBARAWA
About 15 km from Salatiga, there is a small town Ambarawa. They got very good "tahu campur" there. It is a small warung near the old locomotive museum. From Salatiga, go to the direction of "Muncul" and you can't miss it (a fair-sized country road). About half an hour drive. Just before a railroad intersection follow this map below:

The "tahu campur" of Ambarawa is very strong on onion flavors. It does not use "lontong" but "kupat". The warung opens at night, and for warming up your body in the chilli weather, order the "ronde". Try it!

BAKSO PLANET
Many young people eat at this "bakso" warung each afternoon. For some reason, this warung is very popular among youngsters. It is located near "Madya" theatre, so it is alo near "pecel Madya".

The best time to eat at this warung is on Sunday morning, after going to the church. The "soto" is really delicious because they use "santan" or coconut milk. Mix it with "karak" and the "bergedel" with enough "kecap" and you will have a very good time with your "soto"

SATE SAPI SURUH
The best beef "sate" could be found at the renovation site of the "pasar" or market, in front of the "shoping". It opens at night until around 11pm.

sate suruh map The name "suruh" refers to a remote countrysite of Salatiga, whom the people make the best sate. The "sambel kacang" is deliciously mixed with "kunir" for special aroma. You could choose either the "nasi" sate or "lontong" sate dish. Both are delicious.
